The state legislature is gone for the summer recess, but things are busy in the Drug Policy Alliance New Jersey office with our work on implementation of syringe access and our preparation for a new initiative in the fall.

We have been actively supporting syringe access implementation since Governor Corzine signed the syringe access bill in December, and I’m excited to tell you that our state is now on the verge of starting its programs! The New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services just gave official approval for Newark, Paterson, Camden and Atlantic City to move ahead with their syringe access programs, which are expected to begin in early fall.  At the same time, the Department is reopening the application process to allow two additional cities to apply to run programs.

New Jersey desperately needs syringe access to reduce the spread of disease. We have the fifth highest number of adult HIV cases in the country, and almost half of our state’s HIV cases were caused by the sharing of contaminated syringes by injection drug users. Syringe access is proven to reduce the spread of disease—without increasing drug use. After a struggle that has spanned several years, I am proud that we are about to join the rest of the country in offering some form of syringe access.

Looking ahead, we are preparing for a new initiative involving criminal sentencing reform.  The campaign will be rolled out in late fall, but we are already generating interest and media coverage.  On July 23, the Newark Star-Ledger ran an op ed I wrote about changing drug policy in New Jersey.  You can read it below.
