New Mexico
Fights Back Against Student Drug Testing
Tuesday, September 11,
2007
Rio Rancho, New Mexico, a fast-growing suburb of Albuquerque with a
large school district, recently delayed a decision to implement a drug
testing policy that would have affected thousands of students. The
proposal under consideration by the school board would have allowed
random drug testing of 7th- through 12th-grade students who participate
in sports or other extracurricular activities.
After learning of the proposal, Drug Policy Alliance New Mexico sent
letters to Rio Rancho school board members and school officials
highlighting major concerns about student drug testing, including the
lack of research surrounding the efficacy of drug testing policies, and
the cost of diverting scarce resources from more effective reality-based
drug education programs for students. The letters were accompanied by
the booklet Making Sense of Student Drug Testing: Why Educators Are
Saying No, an American Academy of Pediatrics policy
statement opposing student drug testing, and a handout on frequently
asked questions and answers about student drug testing.
DPA New Mexico also sent an action alert to Rio Rancho supporters
encouraging them to attend the upcoming meeting and urge school board
members not to adopt a random student drug testing policy. One parent
contacted DPA directly through the Drug Testing Fails website in order
to take advantage of the wide range of available resources: talking
points, the booklet, and a model sign-on letter.
Amid this pressure from the community, the Albuquerque Journal
(subscription required) published a letter condemning the proposal that
was written by a Students for Sensible Drug Policy member who
is interning at DPA.
The day before the scheduled vote, the school board announced that it
had reconsidered the effectiveness of random student drug testing and
would not be voting on the policy. According to an article in the
Albuquerque Journal, school board members showed concern about the
cost of the program and the lack of evidence that drug testing programs
deter drug use among students – two issues emphasized in DPA’s
materials.
DPA New Mexico’s Julie Roberts said, “We are happy that we can
provide factual information so that community members can make educated
decisions about student drug testing. We can’t take definitive credit
for Rio Rancho’s decision, but it’s clear that getting the word out and
providing good information makes an impact.” Drug Test Hair
DPA New Mexico will continue to urge the Rio Rancho school board not
to reconsider the student drug testing policy, and will encourage the
district to develop effective drug prevention and education programs for
its students.

their own rules and
random drug testing is often the condition of employment.
